Adding emojis to contact names on iPhone is a fun way to stylize individual contacts and give iOS an extra layer of customization. Not only is it fun, it can also help to quickly identify names from your contact list, get an additional visual indicator of text message senders, and smileys even appear on incoming and outgoing calls.
Before you make changes to your contact list, it’s usually a good idea to back them up. Although it’s very likely that something will go wrong, it only takes a moment, and if you accidentally delete something, miss a name or two, or decide you don’t like emoji customization, you can you go back to normal. Once you’ve done that, jump ahead and start customizing your contacts.
Add emoji to contact names on iOS
We’ll focus on going through the iPhone, but technically this works the same way on the iPad and iPod:
- Enable the optional Emoji Keyboard in iOS settings, if you don’t already have it
- Open the Contacts or Phone application, and select the Contacts tab
- Tap the Edit button, then select any contact name to edit
- Tap one of the namespace, then call the Emoji keyboard by tapping the globe icon and select the emoji icon to style the contact name
- Select “Done” when you are finished
- Repeat with other contacts as desired
I prefer to add emoji icons to the end of the contact’s name, which means adding them to the “Last Name” section of the contact, but of course you can also add prefixes by adding them before entering the first name .
It’s worth mentioning that adding emoji icons can change the sorting of names in the contacts list, which uses alphabetical order and grouping by default. You’ll find that the last contacts in the list can change depending on where the emoji is placed, which is another reason why it’s a good idea to put characters at the end of a last name, or the icon itself will be interpreted as a first or last name.
Here’s an example of what it looks like when you get an incoming iMessage from someone whose name is in emoticon style:
Assuming different parent machines are used for each name, it’s very easy to find out who is sending the message, even if you can’t read the name because the phone is far away away. During a custom kick, it’s also helpful to distinguish people from audible signals by setting individual text and phone sounds for each person, if not all, at least those in the “Favorites” list.
Because OS X and iOS share emoji characters, you can make these name customizations from Mac Contacts and then let iCloud sync them to iPhone and iPad. Keep in mind that the latest versions of iOS have a few more characters than the Mac Emoticon Dictionary, which means you’ll have more options if you make these changes from the mobile world.
