How to fix “Windows could not complete system setup” error after running Sysprep. – wintips.org

After the first reboot in a Windows 7 virtual machine (VM), the following error appears on the screen.sysprep“phase:”Windows could not finish setting up the system. Restart the computer to attempt to continue the configuration“. When you click OK, Windows restarts, but the same error appears again with no information. After some research on the Internet, I found that this error message appears on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems if the original operating system has a registry key larger than 8 kilobytes (KB). A fix for this problem is available from Microsoft here and should be applied before running the “sysprep” command. The fix is already included in Windows 7 SP1 systems.

I am writing this article because – in my case – before “syspreping” the VM machine, I did not apply the existing fix, but I found that the “Windows could not finish setting up the system” error can also appear during a clean installation. Windows 7 operating system.
