How to access and manage your Google activity using Google activity controls

Google offers a variety of products in the technology space. Chrome for web browsing on popular Google products; Includes YouTube for watching videos and Maps for route planning. You can access the products online or through an app, but Google recommends that users create an account to maximize the benefits of these products.

When you use these products with your Google Account; Google stores some of your activity in the My Activity repository. Saved activities include the sites you visit; Includes searches you perform and videos you watch. You can manage the type of saved activity using a feature called Activity controls in your Google Account.

Google only stores the activity you perform on a Google product or service if it falls into one of the following categories:

  • Web and app functionality: It’s Chrome; It covers your browsing history and activity on Google products like Maps and Search. It also includes audio recordings from your interactions with Google Assistant.
  • Location History: This stores data of the places you visit or search, including travel routes. It also offers personalized recommendations for places to visit.
  • YouTube History: This covers the videos you search or watch on YouTube.

According to Google, The purpose of storing user activity data is to personalize the user experience. Additionally, users can edit the type of activity they want to save.

How to edit activity saved to your Google Account

To save your activity; The function must match the categories explained previously. In addition, You must sign in to your Google Account to save data under My Activity. If the requirements are met, Here’s how to edit your Google Account’s saved activity:

Step 1: Open the Google Accounts page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

Step 2: On the left side of the new window, Click on Data & Privacy.

Step 3: Scroll down to Log Settings at the bottom of the window.

Step 4: Click My Activity to launch the My Google Activity page.

Step 5: Web and app functionality on new pages; Click the buttons for location history or YouTube history. This should take you to the Action Controls page.

Step 6: On the Action Controls page, Scroll to the bottom and click ‘View motion controls’. It should list all the action controls.

Step 7: Scroll down to Web and App Control. You can click the Disable button to prevent Google from storing data on your web and app searches.

Step 8: Under the Web and App Actions sub-settings, You can view your Chrome history, Voice and voice function can be entered or excluded from saving.

Step 9: Scroll down to the location history control. You can click the disable button to prevent Google from storing data on your location.

Step 10: Scroll down to YouTube History Control. You can click the Disable button to prevent Google from storing data on your searches or watches.

Step 11: Under the YouTube History sub-settings, you can view your YouTube viewing and browsing history; Voice and voice action can be entered or excluded from saving.

How to delete past activity saved in your Google Account

Your web Disabling the setting for Google to save location and YouTube history does not delete previously saved activity. Instead, Your future actions are not saved while old ones are preserved. To delete an activity you previously saved; Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open the Google Accounts page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

Step 4: Click My Activity to launch the My Google Activity page.

Step 5: On the My Google Activity page, click ‘Filter by date and product’.

Step 6: Select the time range of the activity you want to delete.

Step 7: Select the Google product with the function you want to delete.

Step 8: Click Apply to save your filters.

Step 9: You can click Delete next to the selected filters, or scroll through the results of the filtered actions and delete them individually.
