Fix: VirtualBox documentation is empty (resolved) – wintips.org

If you can’t start VirtualBox with a critical “Document Empty” error, the main configuration file for VirtualBox is corrupted. In this case, follow the instructions below to solve the problem.

Problem details: VirtualBox Manager does not start and shows the following error:

Failed to get VirtualBox COM object.
The application will now terminate

The document is empty
Location: ‘C:\Users\user\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml’, line 1 (0), column 1.

How to fix: Failed to get VirtualBox COM object – Document is empty in VirtualBox Manager.

Method 1. Restore VirtualBox.xml from Backup.

1. Open the task manager and make sure that the VirtualBox task is not running. (or restart your computer)

2. Open Explorer and go to the location indicated in the error message: for example:

  • C:\Users\user\.VirtualBox\

3. Find and rename the VirtualBox.xml for VirtualBox.OLD

The document in VirtualBox Manager is empty

4. Then change the name VirtualBox.xml-prev for VirtualBox.xml

5. Now try to start VirtualBox. The problem should go away! If not, proceed to method-2 below.

Method 2. Delete VirtualBox.xml and re-import the VMs.

1. Open the task manager and make sure that the VirtualBox task is not running. (or restart your computer)

2. Open Explorer and go to the location indicated in the error message: for example:

  • C:\Users\user\.VirtualBox\

3. Change the name the VirtualBox.xml for VirtualBox.OLD & the VirtualBox.xml-prev for VirtualBox.xml-prev.OLD

4. Open VirtualBox. It should now open with no errors but no Virtual Machines list. Continue adding them back as follows:

a. In the VirtualBox Manager, click Add button.

b. Navigate to the disk location where your virtual machine files are stored. for example:

c. select .vbox file and click It’s open.

d. Follow the same steps to add the remaining VMs (if any) and you’re done! *

*Note: If everything is fine, delete the “VirtualBox.OLD” and “VirtualBox.xml-prev.OLD” files.
