Fix: Outlook 2016 search not working –

If Outlook 2016 search is not working, proceed below to resolve the issue. This guide contains instructions on how to troubleshoot Outlook search on Windows 10.

In a previous tutorial I wrote a few years ago, I mentioned different ways to fix Outlook search problems on Windows. Since the Outlook search problem still exists in Outlook and later versions of Windows, I decided to write an updated troubleshooting guide to fix search problems in Outlook 2016, 2019 or 365 on Windows 10.

How to fix: Outlook search not working in Outlook 2016, Outlook 2019 or Outlook 365 and Windows 10.

Method 1. Add all Outlook data files to Search.

1. Start Outlook and click on it to search box.
2. Dan to search select menu Search tools > Places to search and make sure all data files are selected.

Method 2. Fix Outlook search problems by updating Microsoft Office.

Usually MS Office updates automatically in the background, but sometimes you need to update it manually to make sure it’s up to date.

1. from Outlook File select the menu Office account.
press Office updates and select Update now.

3. Allow Office settings to install updates and then restart your personal computer.

Method 3. Fix Outlook search not working by rebuilding the index.

A common solution to Outlook search problems is to rebuild the indexing database.

1. Open the Windows Control Panel. To do this, open the search field and type Control Panel. *

*Note: In Windows 7 and Vista: Switch Start > Control Panel.


2. install the View for Small icon and open Indexing capabilities.

3. Select in indexing options Complicated.


4. In advanced options, click Reconstruction to delete and rebuild the index.

5. press OK In the “Rebuild index” message.


6. When indexing is complete near the Indexing capabilities and try searching in Outlook 2016.

Fix Outlook search not working

Method 4. Change how an Outlook file can be indexed.

1. Follow steps 1-3 in method 3 above to unlock Complicated Indexing capabilities.

2a. Yes File types select the tab PST extension and change index type from “Index properties only”. Index properties and file contents.

2b. Repeat the same for the following extensions and click on them OK when done:


3. press OK In the “Rebuild index” message.
4. When indexing is complete, close Indexing Options.
5. Open Outlook and give it a try to search.

Method 5. Exclude Outlook from Windows Search.

Since the Outlook 2016 search problem is usually related to Windows Search, go ahead and exclusion Outlook from indexing. For this:

1. Follow steps 1-2 in method 3 above to open indexing options.
2. Click on Indexing Options Change.

3. Remove the mark the Microsoft Outlook check box and click OK.


4. Click now Complicated and select File types Tab.
5. Uncheck the PST and down check the boxes and click OK.


6. press OK In the “Restore index” message and wait for the indexing to finish.
7. Close indexing options and restart your personal computer.
8. After restarting, check if Outlook 2016 search is working. *

*Note: If Outlook 2016 search is still not working, follow the same steps but this time includes the Microsoft Outlook and PST & OST Files in indexing.

Method 6. Disable the Windows Search service.

1. press at the same time Windows image + R buttons to open the run command window.
2. Enter the following in the Run command window: services.msc and press Enter.


3. In the Services section, double-click Windows Search service


4. Change the Launch type for Off and press OK.


5. Close all windows and restart your personal computer.
6. After restarting, search in Outlook should work now, but a little slower.

Method 7. Outlook search problem with DISM and SFC tools.

1. It’s open command prompt as administrator. For this:

1. Enter the following in the search field: cmd or command line
2. right click on it command line (result) and select Run as administrator.

2. In the command prompt window, type the following command and click Enter:

  • Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth

3. Please be patient while DISM fixes the component store. After the operation is complete (you should be notified that the corruption in the component store has been fixed), give this command and press the button. Enter:

sfc scan now windows 10-8

4. Once the SFC scan is complete, restart your computer.

Method 8. Repair or reinstall Microsoft Office.

Some users reported that the Outlook 2016 search problem was resolved after repairing or reinstalling Office:

1. press at the same time Windows image + R buttons to open the run command window.
2. Enter the following in the Run command window: appwiz.cpl and press Enter.

3. Under Programs and Features, select the version of Office you have installed and click on it Change.

4. leave the Quick repair select an option and click on it Repair.

5. After the Office repair process is complete, launch Outlook and see if the search problem persists. If the error “0xc0000142” appears again, follow the same steps, but this time Online repair option. *

*Note: The “Online Repair” process removes and then reinstalls all Office applications on your computer. After reinstalling, you may be prompted to reactivate your Office product.
