FIX: Error 0x00000709 (Item not found) when printing to network –

Cumulative update KB5006670 for Windows 10 brings a number of improvements and it fixes around 74 issues. However, many users report that the KB5006670 update causes problems with network printing (the printer is not responding) or problems setting up a default printer or cannot set up a shared network printer with error 0x00000709.

Problem description: After installing the KB5006670 update on Windows 10, users are unable to print or connect to network printers or set the printer as the default printer with error(s):

The operation failed (error 0x00000709). Double check the printer name and make sure the printer is connected to the network.


Item not found


Add Printer: Windows cannot connect to the printer – the operation failed with error 0x0000007c or 0x0000011b.


The network printer is not responding

If you are facing any of the above problems or can’t set up a network printer or can’t set up a default printer in Windows 10, continue reading below to solve the problem.

How to fix: 0x00000709, 0x0000007c and 0x0000011b network printing errors in Windows 10.*

* Important: Microsoft claims that the 0x00000709, 0x0000007c, and 0x000006e4 print errors are resolved with the KB5007253 update. So, before moving on to the following methods, download and install manually Open KB5007253 from the Microsoft Update Catalog and check if the issue is resolved.

Method 1. Remove updates KB5006670 and KB5007186.

The first way to resolve printing or network printer setup issues is to remove KB5006670 and KB5007186 (if installed). For this:

1. open the Running utility by clicking the button Windows + R keys on your keyboard.
2. Type cmd and press the buttons Ctrl+Shift+Enter To open the command prompt in administrator mode. *

*Note: If you see any windows asking for permission, click on it Yes.


3. Type the following command and click Enter:

Uninstall Windows 10 update

4. When the confirmation dialog box appears, click on it Yes.


5. After the deletion process is complete, restart Computer.
6. Now try printing or setting a default printer. This time, the printer installation should be successful. If you’re still having issues, proceed with and uninstall the KB5007186 update by issuing this command (at an administrator command prompt): *

  • wusa / delete / kb: 5007186

*Note: If you are able to install the default printer without errors, I recommend to prevent the KB5006670 update from being reinstalled in the future, follow these steps:

1. Download the Tool to show or hide updates tool:
2. Running Click “wushowhide.diagcab”, click “Next” and click “Hide updates”.
3. Choose the 2021-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB5006670) and press The next one.

Method 2. Fix network print error 0x00000709 in registry.

1. It’s open Command line as administrator.
2. In the command line, issue the following command according to the version of Windows 10:

Windows 10 2004, 20H2, 21H1 and 21H2 versions:

  • add reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 713073804 /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Windows 10 v1909:

  • add reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 1921033356 /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Windows v1809 and Server 2019.

  • add reg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 3598754956 /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

3. Close the command prompt and restart your personal computer.

Method 3. Fix error 0x00000709 when printing over a network by overriding printer installation restrictions.

By default, Windows updates released on August 10, 2021 and later require administrative privileges to install drivers. To work around this behavior and allow users to install network printer drivers, do the following:

1. It’s open Command line such as Administrator.
2. At the command line, issue the following command:


3. Restart on your computer and install a network printer.
4. After installation, open a command prompt again as an administrator and issue this command to ensure that only administrators can install printer drivers:


Method 4: Bypass error 0x00000709 by setting a default printer in the registry.

Another way to fix the “0x00000709 – The operation could not be completed” printer error is to set the default printer in the registry. (This method works on Windows 7 operating system) *

*Note: This method has been tested and works on Windows 7 operating system when the default printer cannot be installed using the usual method (Control Panel > Devices and printers > right click On the printer > Set as default).

Step 1. Copy the printer name as it appears in the Printers group.

1. go to Control Panel -> Devices and printers.

Right click select and select the printer that cannot print Characteristics.

Mark printer name and right click -> Copying.


Step 2. Set the default printer in the registry.

1. open the Running using the utility Windows + R shortcut on your keyboard.
2. Type regedit and press OK. *

*Note: If you see any windows asking for permission, click on it Yes.


3. In Registry editor window, go to this address: *

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

4. Now take a moment to back up the Windows registry key: *

* Important: Changing the registry is huge Dangerous, so make sure you take a backup before changing. Creating a backup helps you to go back at any time.

a. Right click Windows press and select Export.


b. Select the location where you want to save the backup copy of the registry key and rename it accordingly. click on Save.


5a. Select Now Windows folder on the left and then double click enabled Device The REG_SZ value in the right pane.

5b. Above Value information, Enter (paste) the name of your printer as shown in Devices and Printers* and click OK. **

* Important notes:
1. Make sure you don’t make any changes after the first dot (.). and leave the value “.winspool.Ne0x:” untouched. Change the printer name as shown in the screenshot below.
2. If the printer is shared by another computer, type the printer name as follows: ¨\\ComputerName\PrinterName”


** 3. If you receive an error Could not edit device: Error writing values new content”, proceed as follows:

1. Right click enabled Windows press and select Permissions

2. Enabled Limited, Administrators and yours accountchoose Full control & Read on and press OK.


3. Follow steps 5a and 5b to change Device The REG_SZ value is as shown above.

6. Close the registry editor and restart your personal computer.

Method 5. Uninstall and reinstall the printer.

The last way to fix network printing error 0x00000709 is to reset the shared printer. For this:

1. go to Control Panel -> Devices and printers.
2. Right click On the printer and select Turn off the device.


3. Finally, reset the network printer using one of the following methods:

1st way. press Add a printer and allow Windows to discover and install the network printer.


Road 2. Install a shared printer from the network:

1. Open the “Run” command window.
2. type “\\” then enter the name of the machine on your network with a shared printer and click OK.


3. Right click on the shared printer and press Connect.
